I never had the need to understand the saying "time = Money" until after having kids. After our recent family holiday to Bali I came to the realisation that my time allocation had majorly shifted and photography had been sacrificed to make time for our family which is ok. Anyone who has had children has made sacrifices it comes with the territory. Good time allocation is key to a balanced life and unfortunately "my time" (photography) has been put on the back burner for now. **disclosure, I am not complaining about having children. I am sure when they move out, become really wealthy and start giving cash hand outs its all worth it!**

I could make the choice and take "my time" from elsewhere but the sacrifices needed to be made just don't fit in with our current lifestyles and providing for our children future, So here is my plan.

Time is money! Photography for me is a passion not necessarily an income, I do some paid work but it's not my major source of income. I am now going to make an effort to shift some time from elsewhere into more paid photography work allowing for me to still provide for our family and take photos! If it takes weeks or decades this is something I'm passionate about and will make it happen.

Here is 8 shots from our recent trip to the East Coast of Tasmania, the greatest place on earth! Feel free to like and share on your favourite social media of choice.

Named after Sir Francis Newdegate, the Governor of Tasmania from 1917-1920, Newdegate Cave is the largest tourist cave in Australia which occurs in dolomite, rather than limestone. Enjoy!

Hawks Nest is a quiet coastal surf town on the New South Wales coast. It's a great little hideaway about 2.5 hours north of Sydney. As we walked along the beach we noticed a large storm front coming in from the West and wasn't it a sight! Here is a small collection of what we witnessed.

Whilst driving down the East coast of Australia we managed to see a fair bit of native Australian wildlife. All these photos were taken in a 24hr time frame Between South West Rocks and Port Macquarie.

This blog is little different from my normal post so stay with me. A friend asked me today about buying a new camera more specifically DSLR'S and the first choice to make is what brand? The two main choices would be Canon or Nikon. There are other camera brands such as sony, panasonic etc which all do a really good job but my experience is limited with those brands.

I am a Canon fan boy I have found them to be the most user friendly. For the beginner photographer they would be my go to brand for ease of use and availability. Nikon make excellent cameras and their higher end range they probably are the better choice technically speaking.

When choosing a camera the more you can spend the better so firstly work out your budget. You can get set up with a decent Body and twin lens kit for under $900 and if you are a beginner photographer that kit should keep you going for at least two years.

The lens is more important than the body. If you are shooting with a $250 body with a $2500 lens you will get outstanding results. If you are shooting with a $2500 body and a $250 lens your results with be limited by the quality of the glass in the lens and make the benefits of an expensive camera body useless.

My go to set up is the Canon 7dII with a Canon 17-55mm f2.8 lens and the Canon 70mm-200mm f2.8. I use a Canon 70d as a second Camera body. The 70d you can pick up for around $950 new and the 7dII body for around $1700 new. If you use the 17-55 on my 7d then on the 70d you won't be able to tell the difference between photos. Moral of the story here is invest money into lenses before a good camera body. Top of the line canon L series lenses are compatible with the majority of Canon bodies so you can always upgrade your body later, Its not as flexible the other way around. A lot of people think that by simply purchasing a good camera your photos are going to be great. Thats the same as saying buying good paint will make you a great artist. You will need to spend time studying the craft of photography. A great source is youtube! just search for something like "rules of photography" or "composition tips." If you are in Hobart I would be happy to run small class free of charge to teach you the basics. Send me an email if you would be interested. Actually I lied, it will cost you a beer ;)

When buying a camera you need to decide if you are predominantly shooting videos or stills as this will be a huge factor when deciding what camera will be right for you.

So to answer your question, What recommendations would you make for me? My first DSLR was a Canon 70d With the 18-135mm kit lens and that was my second camera but first DSLR. I had Panasonic GF3 before that. I can say that the 70d was a perfect camera to learn on and I would recommend it to anyone starting in photography. The equivalent of that camera now is the Canon 80d. I would definitely look into what mirrorless cameras can offer as they are often more affordable and smaller in size.

Today we are celebrating the suburb of Sandy Bay, Enjoy! Here is a small collection of the photos that I have taken in Sandy Bay over the last 12 months.

In the right conditions Aurora's can be seen in the Southern region of Tasmania. "The effect is caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with atoms in the upper atmosphere. In northern and southern regions it is respectively called aurora borealis or Northern Lights and aurora australis or Southern Lights" (copied straight from google) here is a small collection of some that I have seen over the past two years.

This Aurora was high enough above the horizon that it was able to be seen without any hills or mountains in the shot.

This was the best one I have seen to date. This one was taken just in time for a satellite to come into shot. Goats Beach South Arm

The photo was taken only a minutes walk from my door step. It was a bright enough show to be seen from the northern suburbs of Hobart.

Tasmania's East Coast would have to be one of the greatest places on earth. Over the weekend we stayed ten minutes south of a little sleepy town called Swansea. After an amazing sunrise we took the boat out and threw a couple of lines into the water only bringing up undersized Flathead for the first twenty minutes. After travelling to a few different spots we ended up with around seven decent sized fish. After a couple of hours I flew the drone getting some great aerial footage of the boat and the coast. On the way back in we were greeted by a small family of dolphins who accompanied us back into the bay. After a few beers, smokey fires, seafood as fresh as it gets and great company it ended up being a cracking weekend up the Coast!

Another Huon Valley Mid Winter Feast done and dusted. Winter in Tasmania used to be a very cold and boring time of year (now it's just cold). With the introduction of David Walsh's MONA Museum it seems to hav swung little old Tassie around, it now feels that there is always something to see or do in winter. With one of the coldest low pressure systems in years on its way I had a particular shot in mind at O'Grady Falls at the base of Mount Wellington. The snow was predicted to fall at sea level so I thought there was no chance of arriving at my destination which turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. Take a look at the last two photos, Unfortunately with the high winds a tree had blown down which stopped anyone driving any further up the mountain. The one with no snow was when I arrived and the one covered in snow was one hour later when I left.

The walk into the falls is an easy one along a fire trail. Once at the falls I grabbed a few shots then left, luckily I left when I did! As per the last shot at the gate it had dumped a few centimetres of snow and if I had waited any longer I would have been snowed in and not able to drive off the mountain.

Unfortunately it hadn't snowed enough the night before so the shots were not exactly what I had in mind but I am more prepared for next time.

Three week old baby Reuben gets his first shoot.

This was my time at Mona Museums Dark Mofo an annual event that takes place every winter in Hobart, Tasmania! Enjoy.

The majority of photography missions never go 100% to plan. All my equipment was charged packed and good to go, next to no traffic on the way, found a great car spot close by, Clouds are looking perfect for a great sunset and then you turn up to the location and they have locked the gate! Dark Mofo is on in Hobart at the moment which makes for some great photos. The idea was to get to the Dark Park arts area perfectly on sunset and get some long exposure shots of the crowds lining up with the flaming canons in the background. Unfortunately the gates were locked and weren't opening until after sunset. The next best location was the Cenotaph. Hope you enjoy the shots.

Behind the camera stands me, A twenty eight year old real estate agent with a passion for photography and sharing the moment. Last Wednesday the 1/6/16 my beautiful wife Jacqui gave birth to our first Son Reuben. We are all happy and healthy and looking forward to our futures together.

Any of you parents out there will understand that I will be very time poor trying to juggle a career, a photography business, a newborn and a healthy relationship. I will do my best to go out and take photos of our wonderfull state Tasmania as much as I can but will be less frequent with posts.

I literally stood in the one spot, Took four shots and uploaded them to my blog! Lazy Much? Well not really, My alarm went off at 5am and I was so close to turning it off and going back to sleep as the idea of being on top of a frozen windy mountain was not appealing to me at all. My morning was extremely painful, I had no gloves on so every two minutes of taking photos would require 10 minutes of hand defrosting and it hurt. In these shots I wanted to showcase the beauty of Hobart and how small changes in time, angle, zoom length and framing can make such a big difference in your final shot. I hope you like the shots to make my pain worthwhile. If you did then feel free to like and share.

Another disappointing swell :( after my last blog post a southwesterly 6.8mt swell was forecast. Once again I was up at the crack of the sparrows fart to catch a point swell at sunrise and once again the swell was a no show. This time around instead of being treated with a snow covered Mount Wellington I was presented with this amazing sunrise.
